Cantante y actriz estadounidense. Nunca tomó lecciones de canto, y trabajó como secretaria antes de su primera labor profesional como cantante en 1929. Realizó su debut en los escenarios con Girl Crazy (1930) de George e Ira Gershwin (ver George Gershwin; Ira Gershwin). Su estilo brillante y exuberante así como su voz potente la convirtieron en una de las intérpretes favoritas de Irving Berlin, Cole Porter y otros. A mediados de la década de 1930, Merman hizo su primera aparición en Hollywood y más tarde se convirtió en la estrella de su propio programa radial. Entre sus múltiples éxitos en Broadway se cuentan Anything Goes (1934), Red, Hot and Blue (1936), Annie Get Your Gun (1946), Call Me Madam (1950) y Gypsy (1959).
